Mike: Were you? I’ve just moved to Japan recently, so I don’t even know what Johnny’s Agency is.

Erika: It is a talent agency in Japan with so much power.  People say, “You can’t make a male idol TV show without Johnny’s.”

日本の芸能界で絶対的な権力を持つ芸能事務所よ。「ジャニーズ抜きで男性アイドルの番組は作れない」とまで言われてるわ。

Mike:  That’s a lot of influence! Oh, I just googled it and found this. Johnny’s Agency was founded in 1962. Johnny Kitagawa started a baseball team called “Johnny’s” . He scouted four members from the team, and formed a boy band with the same name.

スゴい影響力だね！あ、今ググってみたら、こんな情報が出てきたよ。「ジャニーズ事務所は、1962年に創業された。ジャニー喜多川氏が『ジャニーズ』という野球チームを作った。そのチームから4人のメンバーをスカウトし、野球チームと同名の男性グループを結成した。」

Erika: Really? I’m surprised it has such a long history. I didn’t know it was named after a baseball team.

そうなの？まさか、そんなに古い歴史があるとは驚きだわ。元は野球チームにちなんだ名前だったとは知らなかった。

Mike: According to this online info, a group that became popular in the 1970s was called “Four Leaves”.

このネット情報には、1970年代に人気が出たグループとして「フォーリーブス」の名前が出てる。

Erika: That’s right! I heard one of the members of Four Leaves was also a victim of Johnny’s sexual abuse.

そうそう！確か、フォーリーブスのメンバーのひとりもジャニー喜多川氏の性被害者のひとりだったとか。

Mike: Seriously!? So, I have a question. Why did this issue come into the spotlight after Johnny died?

マジか！で、疑問なんだけど、なんで、ジャニー氏が亡くなってからこの問題が浮上したのかな。

Erika: Maybe everyone was too scared of Johnny to speak up? I think the current president was, too.
