Why are the toilet and bathroom often in the same room in Western homes?

欧米の家庭で「トイレと浴室が同じ部屋にある（バスルーム）」ことが多い理由は、主に以下のような歴史的・文化的・実用的な背景によります。

There are several historical, cultural, and practical reasons why toilets and bathrooms are usually combined in Western houses.

1. 住宅設計の合理性　　Efficient home design

  • 欧米では、水回り（配管）が一箇所に集中していた方が建設コストが安く済むため、トイレ・バスタブ・洗面台を一部屋にまとめる設計が一般的になりました。

  • In many Western countries, it’s more cost-effective to place all the plumbing—like the toilet, shower, and sink—in one room. This makes construction and maintenance easier and cheaper.

2. 入浴の文化が異なる　Different bathing habits

  • 欧米では毎日湯船に浸かる習慣は少なく、シャワー中心の生活が一般的です。シャワーは短時間で済むため、「濡れる空間」と「乾いた空間」を厳密に分ける必要があまりありません。湯気や水しぶきによるカビや傷みに対しても、タイルや換気設備などで対応する設計になっています。

  • In Western culture, most people take quick showers instead of soaking in a bathtub every day. Since they don’t get the entire room wet, there’s no strong need to separate wet and dry areas like in Japanese homes.

3. 個室文化とプライバシーの重視　Privacy and individual use

  • 欧米では個人のプライベート空間を重視する傾向があり、トイレもバスも個別に使うのではなく、一人ずつまとめて使うスタイルが合理的とされてきました。

  • Western families often value personal privacy. So, having a room that includes both the toilet and shower allows each person to use the space alone without being interrupted.

4. 歴史的背景　Historical background

  • 中世ヨーロッパでは、トイレも浴槽も屋外や共同利用が多く、近代になってようやく家庭内に水回りが導入されました。その際、「水を使う場所はまとめてしまう」という考えが定着しました。

  • In medieval Europe, toilets and bathing were often done outside or in shared spaces. When bathrooms were finally added to homes, it was practical to group all water-related facilities in one room.

日本との比較

  • 日本では「浴室＝全身を洗ってから湯船に浸かる」という文化があるため、身体を洗う空間（浴室）と排泄の空間（トイレ）を分けるのが自然とされてきました。

  • さらに、日本の浴室は**濡れることを前提とした構造（防水・床に排水口）であるのに対し、欧米では基本的に濡らさない構造（シャワーカーテンやバスタブ内で完結）**です。

  • In contrast, Japanese bathrooms are usually separate.
    This is because bathing in Japan involves washing the body first and then soaking in a tub. For hygiene and comfort, the toilet and bath area are kept apart. Also, Japanese bathrooms are designed to be fully waterproof, so the entire space can get wet.
